The O'Malley family long owned and operated the Los Angeles Dodgers. Walter O'Malley, who served as the Dodgers' president and owner, proposed in the 1950s that professional sports needed specially trained managers. Building on this idea, Dr. James Mason of Ohio University founded a sports administration program in 1966, regarded as the world's first sports administration degree program, which in recent years has ranked No. 1 several times in the SportBusiness global postgraduate course rankings. Walter's son, Peter O'Malley, served for many years as the Dodgers' president and in 1986 donated the Dodger Baseball Field (Tianjin) to Tianjin University of Sport. Caleb Liu works closely with the O'Malley family and has followed and reported on the later development of the Dodger Baseball Field (Tianjin); the O'Malley family website has cited his research in its coverage.
